Biofuels could provide alternatives to petrol or diesel, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and causing less carbon to be released into the atmosphere. But some people are concerned about the implications for food production if large areas of agricultural land are used to produce biofuels instead.

How can the UK possibly reduce transport emissions without individuals giving up their mobility? It’s Oliver Inderwildi’s job to find out.
Oliver uses computer models to simulate the effects of introducing different types of fuel into our transport system. His team has mapped out the best way to reduce emissions in transport over the next ten years, and biofuels are likely to be part of the solution.
‘We’ve identified which types of biofuels are emissions savers, and which aren’t,’ says Oliver. But he can’t solve all our transport problems: ‘I regularly find myself turning up late to presentations because I’ve got stuck on a train.’
