British summertime invention competition
In July our Inventor in Residence, Mark Champkins, challenged children aged 8-16 years old to put their thinking cap on and invent something to solve a problem we face during the summertime in Britain.
We received over 60 wonderfully creative entries to the competition, which were judged by our Inventor in Residence along with experts from the world of 3D printing.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took the time to enter our competition – we hope you enjoyed the challenge as much as we enjoyed looking through your entries. Keep an eye on our Facebook page as we’ll be uploading a photo album of all the wonderful entries we received very soon.
Sophia Laycock, 11 years old
The winner is 11-year-old Sophia Laycock from Hertfordshire with her invention Pediclean. Sophia’s invention is a portable foot shower to clean the sand off your feet when you have been on the beach.
'When you have been playing on the beach and you are all sandy. It is normal to clean yourself in the sea but you then have to walk back to the car which means you get your feel sandy again. The Pediclean is a simple way to clean the sand off your feet when you get off the beach and uses a squeezy corrugated bottle to push the water down to the cleaning zone.'
Sophia has won a MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D Printer worth over £2,000 and will have her invention created by our Inventor in Residence, 3D printed and featured in our 3D: Printing the Future exhibition opening in October. Congratulations Sophia!
The runners up
Joe Hodgkinson, 9 years old
Joe’s invention is a handy ice cream cone holder that has a lip round it to catch the melting ice cream and stop you from getting sticky fingers. You can also connect two or more Cone Buddies together so you can carry multiple ice creams
The Muffle Puffle
Lottie Buchanan, 13 years old
Lottie’s invention is a combined pillow and ear defender system which stops noise from disturbing you when are trying to sleep on a camping trip. Lottie’s invention was inspired by a recent disastrous camping trip when a cow with a sore hoof kept her awake by mooing all night. She tried to use ear plugs to block out the notice, but found them very uncomfortable – The Muffle Puffle is a comfortable alternative.
Congratulations to our runners up who have each won a hamper of 3D goodies from the Science Museum Shop worth £100.
