Filming and photography
The National Railway Museum York makes a fantastic backdrop for any photography or programming related to rail history – whether it's a scene in a Hollywood blockbuster, a spread in magazine about the golden age of steam, or a live broadcast to mark the anniversary of a key locomotive-related event.
All filming on the NRM site must be supervised by a member of the press office team to ensure that filming goes smoothly, health and safety procedures are adhered to, and that the National Collection is not put at risk. All filming is agreed to subject to press office availability.
Generally fees will apply and these are assessed on a case by case basis. If you are interested in filming at the NRM York please fill in our filming and photography enquiry form (PDF, 252Kb) or speak to Cath or Lydia in our Press Office.
To film at the NRM York free of charge you will have to fulfil one of the following criteria surrounding the benefit to the Museum, which is a not-for-profit organisation dependent on public monies. The criteria for filming free are:
Does the film feature the NRM’s work?
Example: a documentary about the restoration of Duchess of Hamilton or a news piece about the opening of a new exhibition.
Does the film feature an item in the NRM’s collection?
Example: a piece about the anniversary of Mallard breaking the world speed record, showing footage of the locomotive’s current location.
Does the film include an interview with one of the NRM’s staff?
Example: a documentary about the development of the railways, involving interviews with expert members of the NRM’s staff.
Does the film feature the NRM as a tourist attraction?
Example: a holiday programme for Japanese television giving the top five tourist attractions in York, including an item about how the NRM is a top place to go, showing footage of key exhibits.
All members of the public are very welcome to photograph the NRM’s collection as long as the photographs are for personal and non-commercial use. However, all photography intended for commercial use must be coordinated through our press office team.
As with commercial filming, fees generally will apply and these are assessed on a case by case basis. If you are interested in photographing the NRM or any part of the National Collection, please fill in our filming and photography enquiry form (PDF, 252Kb). All photography is agreed to subject to press office availability.
