Volunteering at NRM Shildon
Volunteers at Locomotion, the National Railway Museum at Shildon, are involved in a whole host of different activities. Thanks to their kind assistance, we are able to provide our visitors with a fantastic day out and a chance to enjoy one of the finest railway collections in the world.
We are always pleased to take on new volunteers, so check out our opportunities below and see how you can get involved.
Currently we have the following opportunities available:

- Volunteer Locomotive Crew Member
- Volunteer Gallery Assistant
- NRM Conservation Workshop Volunteer
- Volunteer Events Assistant
- Volunteer Learning Assistant
- Volunteer Museum Assistant
A placement is available to learn on the job by participating in the daily activities in our workshops. The Engineering Heritage Skills Initiative (EHSI) trainee will work on our rolling stock under the supervision of highly qualified engineers, and engage with museum visitors. This placement will include restoration and conservation work, painting, assembly and disassembly, planning and photography, as well as work on live steam operating locomotives.
