Could stem cells treat disease?
Scientists are currently trialling new ways of using stem cells to treat disease or repair the body. Vets have already successfully repaired the tendons and ligaments of injured horses. By extracting stem cells from a horse’s bone marrow, then multiplying and re-injecting the cells, they’ve seen damaged tendons fully repaired. Numerous medical trials with humans are trying to treat a variety of illnesses, including age-related blindness, osteoarthritis, heart disease and dementia.
