Is deep brain stimulation safe?
The underlying principles and mechanisms of this new technology are still unclear. When placed in specific areas it has provided therapeutic benefits for people with Parkinson’s disease or severe depression. Researchers are still learning about the risks of using deep brain stimulation. In some studies it has been documented that slight adjustments in the electrode voltage or placement can induce serious depression in people with Parkinson’s.
