What causes genetic conditions?
Genetic conditions are caused by the inheritance of DNA variants that cause a change in one of the genes affecting the way the body works or develops. There are over 10,000 different genetic conditions, which together affect over two million people in the UK. Some, like cystic fibrosis and sickle-cell disease, cause serious health problems for those who inherit them. Doctors can now offer tests for many genetic conditions.
