What is the 1000 Genomes Project?
Another spin-off from the Human Genome Project, the 1000 Genomes Project was launched in 2008, running for three years. Its goal was to capture rare genetic variations that only occur in less than 5% of people by capturing data from at least 1000 people. These people are from all over the world: from the UK, Italy, Finland, North America, Japan, Vietnam, China, Nigeria, the Gambia, Kenya and elsewhere in Africa. The 1000 Genomes Project is showing researchers how dynamic the human genome really is, and why it is so.
