What happened after the Human Genome Project?

In 2000 the completion of the first draft of the human genome was announced by US president Bill Clinton. At this time, almost 20% of the code had yet to be sequenced, and in 2003 a new version was released. Scientists were surprised by the complexity of genes and that humans only have around 20,000, compared to earlier estimates of 100,000. There are still gaps, and efforts to fill these gaps using new sequencing technologies are ongoing. The focus now is on understanding how these genes are regulated and what role they play.
