Some scientists believe that 'modern' humans descended from different populations of Homo erectus, who lived all over the world but travelled around and interbred with each other. According to the theory, they gradually evolved into ancient humans about 250,000 years ago and, later, into modern humans. This is known as the 'multiregional' theory, because it says that modern humans arose in many different places at the same time.
