The Who am I? gallery explores the challenging area of biomedical science, covering major themes such as human identity, language, consciousness, genetics, sexuality and brain science.
Seven artists have contributed works for the gallery that engage with universal narratives relating to these themes. Four of the works were commissioned specially for the gallery, but all of them share a particular relationship with traditional materials such as paint, pen and ink or cast iron.
Selecting works that clearly held 'the mark of the human hand' was a deliberate curatorial intention - the aim being to reinforce the extraordinary nature and individuality of humans, an idea which is at the core of the entire exhibition. The works are mostly integrated with objects in themed cases, which in each case creates a very particular contextual 'frame'.
