We are pleased to announce that from May 2009 the Science Museum Library (SML) in London will be extending its opening hours to include evening and weekend opening. On weekdays the Library will now open at 09.30, closing at 20.30, and on Saturdays it will now open from 10.00 until 18.00.  It will remain closed on bank holiday weekends and whenever the Central Library is closed.

The STS Desk (for SML enquiries and help with Science Museum Library & Archive collections in London and Wroughton) will be staffed Monday to Friday 10.00 to 17.00, however staff will not be available during evening and Saturday opening. The 19th century books from the Science & Technology Studies (STS) collection are now housed in our adjacent store and are available on request whenever the desk is staffed. The 20th century STS books and periodicals, covering the history biography and social context of science technology and medicine plus reprints of classic works, and professional works on librarianship and museology, will now be available to users an additional 28 hours per week, an 80% increase.

User feedback has consistently requested extended hours, but though SML aspired to provide this, an affordable solution could not be found until now.  We are grateful for the help and goodwill which has allowed us to resolve this issue, and expect these hours to be sustainable for the foreseeable future.
