Library catalogues

Our main library catalogue has changed and we no longer share a catalogue with Imperial College. Our new catalogue documents a large part of our library holdings stored at our Wroughton site and everything shelved in the Research Centre.

Over two-thirds of the catalogued book collections are on the computer catalogue, including:

  • All histories and biographies of science, technology and medicine
  • Journals and periodicals
  • Books published before 1800
  • 19th century books on the physical sciences, engineering and scientific exploration.
  • 20th century books on general science, astronomy, physics and chemistry
  • 20th century books on road, sea and air transport
  • Everything published after 1983

Tip and hints

You can search the online catalogue for library material at London and Wroughton. Electronic resources will be added to the system gradually.

It is generally easier if you use the advanced search for

  • Books: limit to Item types 'Book', 'Book Not for Loan' and 'Reference Book'
  • Journals: use Title Phrase instead of Keyword, and limit to 'Journal Not for Loan'
  • Limiting by date:  you can only do this by using Advanced Search
  • Limiting by format: not all formats shown are used yet

Please contact us to find out what else we may have in the library collections and staff will check our card catalogue and our other lists of collections.

Our remaining card catalogue entries are gradually being computerised. Volunteers are also listing our trade literature collection and we hope to add these to the library catalogue in the near future

Enhanced services

Once you have registered on the online catalogue you can access our enhanced services. You can:

  • suggest new books to be added to the library
  • see your search and your reading history
  • create your own reading lists (private or public)
  • place a hold for loanable books stored remotely. They will then be transported from Wroughton to London or visa-versa, so you can use them there. You cannot do this for rare books, please see Ordering Library & Archive Collections
  • see what you have borrowed and renew items (if you have borrowing rights).
