3D Summer at the Science Museum

Experience the Science Museum in a whole new dimension this summer. Take part in 3D design workshops, make your own 3D glasses and create a 3D computerised version of yourself with the chance to be featured in a new exhibition. 

3D Summer at the Science Museum (25 July-1 September) includes a variety of free family activities that explore the three dimensional world, with workshops, a family trail and many other activities to keep everyone entertained over the holidays.

New IMAX Film – Penguins 3D
Suitable for all ages
Charges apply

Watch the European premiere of a new IMAX film, Penguins 3D – an adventure narrated by David Attenborough, which depicts the epic journey of a young King Penguin from awkward adolescence to adulthood.  Filmed in the spectacular Antarctic world of 6 million penguins and leopard seals, Penguins 3D will run in our IMAX Cinema from 22 July - 1 September. 3D Summer workshops

Pop Up Museum, FREE
Dates: 25 July – 1 September 2013 (except 3 August)
Drop in between 12.30 -13.30 weekdays, 13.00 – 14.00 weekends
Location: First Floor, Agriculture gallery
Age range: 5+

Take part in a workshop to create your own pop up Science Museum filled with some favourite objects from the collection.

3D Spec-tacular, FREE
Dates: 25 July – 1 September (Drop in between 15.00-16.00)
Location: First Floor, Agriculture gallery
Age range: 5+

Embark on a journey through the third dimension! Make your own 3D glasses, try them out and see the world through different eyes.

Antenna Live: Scanning in 3D, FREE
Dates: 6, 7 & 8 August
Location: First Floor opposite Agriculture gallery
Age range: 8+

Step inside the scanning booth, strike a pose and create a 3D computerised version of yourself. Come along and meet Digital Native Academy, a company at the forefront of 3D scanning technology. Get 3D scanned and you could have a figurine of yourself placed in our 3D: Printing the Future exhibition launching in October.

Antenna Live: Bugs in 3D, FREE
Dates: TBC
Location: Ground Floor, Antenna gallery
Suitable for all ages

Meet Colossus Productions, the team behind David Attenborough’s ground-breaking new 3D TV series, Micro Monsters 3D. Talk to the camera crew and find out how they developed a brand-new 3D filming technique especially for this series. We will even be filming bugs live on gallery!

Take part in our 3D design workshop. Discover the burgeoning industry innovating with 3D printing. Learn how to create a 3D design with the latest software and see your creation printed.
Continue your 3D experience by visiting our Legend of Apollo 4D motion effects theatre, Red Arrows 3D flight simulation theatre and the new Euro Fighter simulator.

Discover the thrill of flying in the cockpit of a Red Arrows jet in our breathtaking Red Arrows 3D flight simulation theatre.

Feel the impact of a Saturn V rocket launch, be part of a moon landing and discover the smell of space in Legend of Apollo at our 4D cinema.

Coming Soon…3D Summer Invention Competition

If you were spending summer in Britain what useful item would you need for your holiday? We will be calling on visitors to get creative and invent something to solve a British summertime problem for a chance to get their design printed in 3D and exhibited in the Museum. Details to be announced soon…

The Energy Show
Dates: 22 July – 31 August
Location: IMAX Cinema
Age range: 7+

This summer see the premiere of The Energy Show, an electrifying new science show for families with children aged 7+. Follow Annabella and Phil, two futuristic science students, as they race against time to prove their knowledge of energy through a series of live experiments.
