Climate Science Project

In December 2010 the Science Museum opened a new gallery called atmosphere… exploring climate science. As part of the associated Climate Changing Programme, from 2010 – 2013 the Science Museum’s Outreach team is working in partnership with other museums and science centres across the UK to deliver a series of exciting shows and workshops to Year 9 students.

Over the three years of the project, the team aims to reach over 5000 students and their teachers in secondary schools in London, York, Manchester, Bristol and the North West of England.

The project

The Climate Science Outreach Project aims to enable and equip year 9 students to engage and inspire their peers on the subject of climate change. We achieve this by exploring different forms of science communication. 

Since the project started we’ve also seen many additional benefits including improved communication and team-working skills, improved literacy, increased interest in science and strengthened relationships across departments in schools.

All participating schools receive resources and support from the Science Museum to help teachers and students complete the project. We also offer events in the schools' local museums and science centres. These include workshops to kick start the project, a special Punk Science show and a celebration event to showcase the students’ work.

Year 1

In year one (2010-11), students created their own pieces of sci-art to communicate climate change themes.  The artworks were incredible and formed a special exhibition that toured our partner museums and which we compiled into a photo book. Download the Climate Art photo book (pdf).

Year 2

In year 2 (2011-12), students took on our science journalism challenge and produced stories for our special edition of ATMOS magazine. The stories are to an extremely high standard and you can download an electronic copy of ATMOS (pdf) here.

Year 3

In the final year of the project (2012-13) participating students are focusing on live events and face-to-face science communication.  Their work will be showcased in the partner museums in summer 2013.
