We recruit twice a year: in May and in November. We are always looking for enthusiastic people to volunteer! The following are examples of the kind of roles we have on offer:
Gallery ToursDaily short tours designed to introduce visitors to a gallery and provide contextual and specialised information. Each tour will last between 30 and 40 minutes.
We ask Volunteers to commit to one tour every two weeks for at least one year. Volunteers are given extensive training to fulfil their role.
Family Events FacilitatorHelp engage, encourage and inspire young visitors in science. Family Events Facilitators help the Learning Department present shows, tours and treasure hunts to family audiences.
We look for Volunteers who are free during the week to help on shows during the half-term and holiday periods. We ask our Volunteers to help for two days each month.
Contemporary Science Researcher The Science Museum’s Dana and Antennae programmes takes a fresh, no-holds-barred look at the biggest issues in science today. Help the Contemporary Science Team research issues and develop content for their events.
In order to integrate you fully into the team, we ask Volunteers to commit for a month, volunteering five days a week.
Behind the Scenes WorkThere are a variety of exciting behind the scenes Volunteer opportunities throughout the Museum. We have roles in the conservation, documentation and curatorial departments with Volunteers performing invaluable tasks from preserving existing collections to delving into and cataloguing brand new collections.
Commitment for these behind the scenes roles is project specific, but usually we ask for a regular commitment of around one day every week for about 3 to 6 months.
