New types of biofuels aren't yet proven to be a significantly better option than fossil fuels. While a lot of scientists are gazing into their crystal balls, others are taking up the challenge of improving today's biofuels.

'Biofuels can be pushed a long way in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions,' says Jeremy Woods, a biofuel analyst from Imperial College London. 'But there are some fundamental issues yet to be overcome.'
