In the UK, wood has always been a favourite in stoves and bonfires, but it's now a top choice for power stations too. Dr Angela Karp, biomass expert from Rothamsted Research, explains:

'By 2010, UK energy providers will need to get 10% of all energy from renewable sources. To meet this target, many power stations now burn plants together with fossil fuels.'
