But in other countries the story's different, says Friends of the Earth's Ed Matthew: 'Farmers in the UK may benefit, but we know that large-scale farms in developing countries often mean low-paid jobs and even human-rights abuses.'
Jeremy Woods, biofuels analyst from Imperial College London, says the effects vary: 'When these developments are run by large companies, they often provide little value to local communities, but some small-holder estates can provide a good source of income for developing countries.'
