It came from outer space...
The Earth is hit with 25 tonnes of space debris every day. Most particles fall into the sea or are so small that you'd never notice them.
Meteors are larger chunks that burn up as fireballs when they hit the Earth's atmosphere - you can see them as shooting stars. We call the pieces that land on Earth meteorites.
