New weapon to wage war on bird flu
The team's ingenious technique found that three of the affected genes in the fruit fly also exist in humans. The next challenge for researchers is to target these genes and stop the virus copying itself. They hope this could become a new approach for developing drugs to fight resistant strains of flu, such as H5N1 bird flu.
This research was reported in the journal Nature on 10 July 2008.
