Beijing's anti-smog measures have given scientists the unique opportunity to observe pollution levels before, during and after a period of industrial shutdown.
The first smog-seeking planes were launched on 21 August and the science missions will continue until the end of September. The experiments have been timed to meet the pollution as it slowly drifts away from China.
