Top teamwork
With its huge experimental caverns, complicated detectors and 27-kilometre-long tunnel, it's been an international collaboration - no one country could have done it alone. Scientists, engineers and technicians from over 50 countries have spent 10 years and 3 billion Euros building it, including a strong team from the UK.Just one of the four detectors, ATLAS, has needed the input of over 1800 physicists. Its millions of bits of technical kit fill up the space of a five-storey building and weigh about the same as 1500 elephants.
