Tricky treacle

Not actual treacle, of course. But many scientists reckon that the universe is filled with a kind of invisible treacle they call the 'Higgs field'. Some particles interact strongly with this field, and so have a lot of mass, while others, like photons, don't interact at all, so have no mass.

It's one of the only ways to explain mass that fits in with other key ideas about the universe.
