Eyes wide open

'Before he received the implant, the patient tended to spend most of the day awake but with his eyes closed,' adds Joseph Giacino from JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute.

'Once the electrodes were implanted and turned on, the most striking and immediate effect was that he opened his eyes. His eyes were wide open and he was very visually alert
- wherever the action was, that's where he was focusing.'
