Pinpoint accuracy
Before surgery, doctors use brain scans to build up a computer-generated map of the brain and the area they want to target. 'The computer-generated maps allow surgeons to target structures deep in the brain with millimetre precision,' explains Ali.
During surgery, the patient's head is completely immobilised by a metal frame. Surgeons remove a small piece of the skull, and a surgical robot slowly and carefully inserts the electrodes into the target area of the brain.
