Jack of all trades

'The electrodes can activate wide regions of the brain,' says Ali. 'They can also block abnormal activity. Deep brain stimulation has multiple effects, depending on the underlying condition that you are trying to treat.'

'There are a vast number of things that you can do with deep brain stimulation,' adds Nicholas Schiff, a neuroscience expert from Weill Cornell Medical College. 'You can set the electrodes to only stimulate local brain areas instead of a wider region, and different frequencies have different effects.'
