The ability to use an implant to restore language and improve consciousness in a patient with brain damage raises big ethical questions.

'In retrospect, it's easy to say "it works, you did a good job",' says Joseph Fins, a medical-ethics expert from Weill Cornell Medical College. 'But there are a lot of ethical challenges. It's more than a science issue, it's a social issue.'
