Practice makes perfect
Surgeons and their teams need to be able to perform sentinel node biopsy to a consistently high standard. Researchers developed and tested a special training programme to give them the structured tuition and practice they'll need.
Trainees had to attend theory workshops and spend time in the operating theatre observing. Then, under the watchful eye of a doctor familiar with the sentinel node procedure, each surgical team completed 40 operations. Only then were they declared qualified.
