Hard to heal

Cartilage, the elastic tissue that forms a smooth shock-absorbing surface for joints, can tear or be worn down over time. The body isn't very good at repairing damaged cartilage on its own, so it needs a helping hand to heal properly.

Existing treatments to repair cartilage, which often involve transplanting cartilage from one bone to another, give inconsistent results and can be painful and expensive.
