Dangerous debris
In 2000, an Air France Concorde crashed after a small strip of metal on the runway burst the plane's tyres during takeoff. The disaster killed more than a hundred people and led to calls for a technology that could prevent further tragedies.
'The standard way to look for objects on runways is to drive a car along it four times a day and spot things by eye,' explains Graham Binns, Tarsier's chief engineer. 'This isn't ideal because of the gaps between inspections and the difficulties of spotting objects at night.'
