24-hour protection

Tarsier works by using its radar to sweep the runway looking for small changes that show an object has appeared. When it spots something, the coordinates are sent to a camera which zooms in on the object. An operator then looks at the image and assesses what needs to be done.

'One of the biggest challenges in creating Tarsier was to design a system that can work day and night,' says Graham Binns. 'We had to develop a safe, accurate laser that can be pointed at objects to illuminate them at night.'
