Rolls-Royce had to come up with various new technologies for the Trent 900. These include modified fan blades to reduce noise pollution and special engine coatings to boost efficiency.

The improvements in fuel efficiency could save almost a million pounds in fuel costs and reduce carbon emissions by 6150 tonnes per aircraft per year, says Rolls-Royce.
