Soaking in the sun

Pioneering low-energy architect Brenda Vale, who designed the Hockerton housing project in Nottinghamshire, explains how you can get free heating by facing the sun:

'The sunlight shining through the windows is absorbed by the floor tiles and the walls and ceilings of the rooms. These become warm and radiate heat which, unlike the sunlight, cannot escape through the windows very easily. So, the inside is kept warm for free, as sunlight costs nothing.'
