Sun hat

Having the building's windows face south makes the most of the free heating from the Sun.

To prevent overheating in summer, the building is designed to provide shade when the Sun is high in the sky - just like a sun hat. But summer shading doesn't stop the low-lying winter sunshine entering the windows and heating the rooms.

Airtight glazing is essential to keep the heat in and draughts out during the winter. But what stops heat escaping through the walls and roofs?
