Feeling hot

How does it work? 'In summer air cooled within a central chamber spreads across the floor while warmer air rises out through huge chimney-like stacks. Research on the low-energy ventilation system tested it for the hottest part of London.'
Alan Short, architect, Short and Associates

Scientist Andrew Woods put the design to the test.
'Water flowing through the model mimics air-flow in the building. So we put a see-through model of the building in a water tank and pumped in coloured fresh and salt water to simulate the flow of warm and cool air.'
