An eggcellent idea

Beaufort Court was once an egg farm for the local Ovaltine factory in Hertfordshire. It's now offices. Architect David Lloyd Jones explains the challenge of making the UK's first self-sufficient commercial building.

'We not only harnessed the Sun, wind and daylight to make sure no energy was wasted - we used technologies that generate energy as part of the building's structure and in the surrounding landscape. Overlaying this was the need to transform a building designed as a home for chickens into a stimulating workplace for people.'
