Safe, but not indestructible

Some of the world's biggest cities are built over earthquake hot spots. But engineers say it simply isn't possible to construct a 100 per cent earthquake proof building - one that suffers no damage at all in the biggest quakes. No one could afford to build it.

So instead they're designing buildings that stay structurally safe during earth tremors. People inside can escape and return as soon as possible afterwards.
