Not just dry
We all know that deserts are dry places with little rain, but they can be hot, salty, dusty and corrosive places too. And one unusual desert is even freezing cold - Antarctica.
People still want to live and work in deserts though, so architects and engineers must meet the challenge to create comfortable, sustainable buildings that can cope with their hostile surroundings. Some of their solutions are hi tech, while others make use of today's materials in creative new ways. And occasionally engineers are discovering that age-old tricks work best.
