It's surprising then that, in England, more than
1 in 10 new homes are built in flood-risk areas.
One such place is the Thames Gateway, where 120,000 new homes will be built by 2016. Much of the area is a flood plain for the Thames Estuary. Climate change will only add to the flood risk these new homes will face.
