Old dogs, new tricks
Some of the biggest challenges faced by architects, engineers and scientists come not when they are making something new, but when they already have a building that was designed for a different purpose.
Project Director Richard Crossland explains: 'Renovating or redesigning existing buildings is often more difficult and expensive than tearing them down and starting again. Of course, that's not always possible (or desirable) and the technical challenges in renovations can make them the most satisfying projects.'
