An intriguing body of work

The building had been dangerous and unused for 50 years, but the heritage listing meant that LSO couldn't extend into the churchyard. So, to find the extra space they needed, they went underground. This meant that the crumbling church had to be stabilised as the foundations were dug away.

This was a sensitive matter, as Richard Crossland explains: 'Specialist body-movers excavated 1600 graves around the church. The graveyard had been used recently enough that there were still people living in the area who had relatives buried there.'
