Speedy shelter

In the days after a disaster, people need refuge - fast. At the Shelter Centre in Cambridge, researchers are developing speedier solutions to a problem that's more complex than it seems...

Antonella Vitale explains, 'Most emergency tents are still made from old-fashioned, heavy canvas, as modern camping tents aren't suitable for
long-term use. There's a clear need for a light tent that's fast to put together, adaptable and durable. It must be easy to stockpile and economical to airlift. We've developed a number of prototypes and are working to improve them further.'
