Cool in a crisis
'We want to give people dignified housing,' says Markus. 'After the recent tsunami, people were sheltering in tin-roofed shacks that got scorching hot. Our pods are specially designed to stay cool. The walls of the domes have two layers spaced by a gap. Air moves into the gap, and is heated by the Sun. Hot air rises, creating an air stream. This passive ventilation keeps the pod cool without electricity, while the Sun's rays beam through the cloudy plastic to light up the space.'
