Traditional technology, new thinking

'After an earthquake in India, we encouraged people to hinge branches together with wire. They covered the structure with palm-leaf mats to make a short-term shelter, like a tent,' says Nabeel Hamdi.

'Once people had the time and resources to build walls, they could use the tent as a roof in the more permanent house. It was just a new way of thinking about the technology to hand. Nothing went to waste, people were able to make their own houses, and when the materials rot, they can be replaced locally.'
