9/11 also set engineers three new and important challenges - to find out how the twin towers' design helped so many people escape, how it ultimately failed to protect the victims, and how to incorporate both lessons into the skyscrapers of the future.
Now, in London and New York, the first generation of ultra-safe, super-tall towers are rising.
