Meanwhile at the University of Southampton, biometric scientist Mark Nixon is keeping his ears pricked for new developments. His team have developed a computer programme to measure the shape of your ears.

'People's ears seem to be pretty unique', Nixon explains. 'Ears don't change shape as you grow older, and they don't distort when you pull a face. Hair and hearing aids can get in the way, but ears could be used together with other biometrics - perhaps even to spot people from CCTV pictures.'
