United we stand
Information taken from real-life blazes is invaluable to fire scientists. It's not often possible to deliberately set fire to real buildings, but a number of years ago scientists at the Building Research Establishment, with the then British Steel, got a chance to do just that.
Fire safety researcher Roger Plank was involved in these experiments 'Until then, we only knew how a single beam or slab would react, but when you connect them all together to make a building, the results are quite different.'
