Less is more

'Having a better understanding of the way whole structures respond to fire means we can be more intelligent about design for fire protection,' says Barbara Lane, a fire safety engineer with Arup Fire.

'In the past we've used coatings to keep the heat off, but now we think this might not always be necessary.

'In one building the team looked at they found that the connector holding the floors of the building to its central core was very vulnerable in fire. A small design change made the whole building tougher.'
