Braving it in Antarctica

Scientists at the Halley Research Station in Antarctica are braving the conditions to carry out weather measurements using - among other things - a giant balloon.

Halley is the UK's most isolated research station, lying on the Brunt ice shelf. In the winter, researchers endure 115 days of darkness and an average temperature of -30 ºC.

'Records show that there's been an increase in the average global surface temperature of 0.4 - 0.8 ºC over the past 150 years.' Phil Jones, Climate Research Unit, UEA
